What Does Weight Loss Mean To You?

Me in April 2011 ~ First Dress
Today I was scanning through some of my older posts at Nutrisystem discussion forum and found something that made me want to write.

Nutrisystem had what they called a “Daily Dose” and I love and miss it! It was written by some brilliant writers that help you continue in your weight loss journey. My post was in regards to a question they posed “What does weight loss mean to you?”

Here were my answers at the time dated February 6, 2010.

1) Live longer
2) Better control of my Diabetes
3) Smile more
4) Less Chronic pain
5) Feel my body for the first time
6) Exercise Exercise Exercise
7) To be able to have time with my husband in outdoor activities like bike riding.
8) To have a desire to live life happier and healthier
9) To be a good example to others
10) To help support others efforts in weight loss
11) To prove to myself I could do it.
12) To be able to go up and down the stairs without being out of breath
13) To be able to put on skinny pants and smile.

As I reflect these statements nothing on there has changed except its given me a renewal of purpose in my journey. I've decided its time to try to lose the 6 pounds I've gained over the course of 2 years.  I was going to start Nutrisystem again, I actually tried this weekend, but I just can't take eating their food so many times a day.  I love the breakfasts and snacks, so I will add those to my diet.

The freedom that comes from maintenance has its risks of gaining weight. I love to be able to eat a Vitatop twice a day if I want, or to be able to eat a few pretzels here or there.; hence the problem.

When your on a “plan” you stick to that plan until your done, and you reap the rewards of that plan by losing weight. Then your back to the mind games of maintenance again. Its truly a endless circle, but one thing to keep in mind is to succeed in maintenance is to make the right choices and to hop back on the plan that got you there when you see your moving up in weight.

  1. I think it's such a great list that you've made about what weight loss mean to you.
Weight loss mean to me: Feeling better, more self confidence, being healthy, being fit (which is the best one of them all).

  2. Sheri, I loved that list!!! When I was young & lost the weight back then, for me, it was about not being teased & finding a guy type of stuff. Now it is all about being healthy & living a better life & setting a good example for the kids, grandkids & others.. all different from when I was young.

As for maintenance, in my eyes, one can never go back to "the before" because if you do, the weight comes on. You have to learn to have a plan that works & is livable but yet allows treats every do often but not so often that the weight sneaks back on. I have done post on "that sneak'! ;-)

  3. @Jody - Fit at 53 Thank You Jody! My struggle is I get "lost". Like your off a plan of structured eating and then maintenance your left out in no man's world to figure out on your own. Then you figure what you think is right out and you lose sight. Crazy!

  4. Sheri, you look so good in your dress. What a good figure!!!! I can't say that I'm that good on maintenance since I gained 18 pounds last year when my mother-in-law was driving me nuts 24/7 for 8 solid months. Currently, I've lost 11 of that 18 pounds. So maybe I'm coming back to my senses. What I can tell you is that when I gained that weight, my figure got all lumpy again. You don't want to do that to yourself.

  5. @affectionforfitness Thank you so much Kate for your words! I really needed to hear that.

You are on your way back down, that is what is important. That's what we have to remember throughout our journey. Be proud of how far we've come.

  6. It means freedom, passion, and fullness of life to me! :) Love this post. :)
    Thank you.

  7. @Donloree Thank you so much Donloree! I love your answer. :)

  8. Hi Sheri,

I was thinking about you today. A person I know just had his foot amputated today due mostly in part to refusing to control his diabetes. He didn't follow dr.'s orders, didn't regularly take his meds, didn't exercise, didn't eat properly, and was very overweight. I feel just awful for him, and it makes me feel bad because this didn't ever have to happen. I'm not blaming him exactly, because many people have the same bad habits but don't have diabetes. He is a good person who didn't deserve this ordeal.

But it made me think, the most important reason you lost weight and started exercising still is to control diabetes and have a healthy life, not looking good. My best reason is my internal health too. Many days, I take it for granted. But not today.

  9. Weight loss means not feeling sluggish. It's have the happy energy to move and play and LIVE with confidence. And heck, my weight loss makes me feel sexy, too. boo-yah!

  10. I could write a book, but in a nutshell weight loss means not being bound in an unhealthy body. You look great!

  11. Losing the weight has changed my life!!! :)

  12. Very cute dress! After 10 years, I am finally getting the hang of maintenance, but am knocking on wood as I type this! I think my workout program and running are burning off any excess calories.
