Running Around The Heat

Source
This week I made a decision to start running in the early mornings before work because the heat was so bad last week I could barely make it through a run.  My body just isn't equipped to make it through heat and sun.

I don't know if its because I am still a new runner or because I still have fat on my body.  Probably the latter because my husband says that I am not a new runner anymore.  A new runner doesn't train over 5K's a run like I do, I really liked to hear that made me feel good.

One thing that has been so nice is when I run in the morning I am relaxed, calm, not as stressed, I'm alert and not foggy at work and very confident.  Its truly a wonderful feeling. I also like not having to workout when I get off work.  Something I figured out tonight was when I work later like this I don't have to go through the insufferable temptation when I go home and pig out because I am working during those times.  When I do get off work, its 6pm and its time for dinner.

Yes, I think I might stick with this schedule. I am just going to play it by ear and see.

Which do you prefer, morning or evening workouts?

  1. Definitely morning workouts for me. In the evening I'm tired and very unmotivated.

  2. I prefer morning workouts, they leave me feeling awesome and ready to start my day. I'd love to be really awesome and get into two-a-days. Its one of my goals.

  3. Mornings. The morning workout revitalizes me for the day. But I think any way that motivates you to JUST DO IT is good. There was a time when I walked in the evenings and that was all I did - but I did it w/ my husband and because that was our time together to talk alone, I wanted to do it. Whatever gets me moving is right for me as what gets you moving is right for you.

  4. I am totally a morning exercise person. I rarely workout in the afternoon. It started as a schedule issue, but now it's become my favorite way to start the day. No amount of coffee can make up for the endorphins if I skip a workout. As for the heat, I am not overweight and I've been running for 10 years and I still complain when temps approach 70. :-P

  5. I think that is also why I prefer to run in the mornings. Because then I am not feeling foggy at work, I am alert.
And your husband is right. You are not a new runner anymore.

  7. @Lily Fluffbottom That is a big goal, but you can do anything you set your mind too! I am probably going to do my weight lifting at night, so I will be doing 2 a day possible.

  9. @got2run4me I agree! No coffee can do what running does! Its good to know that other runners suffer with the heat like I do. My husband said you eventually build up to it. I don't know...bluk!

  11. You a new runner!!!!!!!!!! NEVER...

I come from South Africa so am used to the heat, and running in the heat is no problem for me, one of the reason's I do not understand how I could have been diagnosed with MS as MS suffers suffer in the heat...I love it...
I prefer training around 9/10am not earlier....I used to teach at 6am for years...so glad to be able to laze around in my bed now.
I'm running at night a lot now and do find it much harder...but I do think its good to train all hours of the day...not to allow the body to get into one pattern....

  13. @Marcelle Thank you Marcelle!!!!!!!

That is good you love the heat so much. I guess since I started running in the cold weather I am prone to like that more.

    Good thoughts on training!

  14. I have always been a morn person, well, since the 24 hour gyms hit.. before that, I had no choice but to go after work. I love morns - starts the day off right & don't have to worry about stuff getting in the way later. Saying all that, people need to do it when they will do it no matter what time that is.

Here in CA, weird weather for us - no warmth here....

  15. @Jody - Fit at 53You are so right! Everyone needs to do what is best for them. The important thing is they do it.

  16. Hi Sheri,

You probably feel hot because of hot weather--not because of any personal attribute. You shouldn't look for some reason regarding yourself when the heat probably bothers most people.

Mornings are magic in the gym because the only people there are those who CHOOSE to be up at 5:00 a.m. and exercise is that valuable to them. So the energy level in the gym is high and people are mostly cheerful and happy. The same people come in the morning day after day, year after year. It's a great fitness community.

    :-) Marion
